When global crises in several areas and civil society mobilization for a just transition are multiplying, sustainability of development trajectories and the need for greater consistency of SDGs have risen to the forefront of many debates. Anchored in a context where economic issues often take precedence over longer-term environmental problems, these debates have contributed to bring the notion of strong sustainability – the AFD 15th International Research Conference flagship topic – back to the spotlight.

The conference’s multidisciplinary program is designed around three principles of strong sustainability: non-substitutability between capitals, multidimensionality, and the social construct. The event comprises two academic days and one open discussion day7 plenary sessions and 13 parallel sessions will combine theoretical insights, testimonies, and recommendations for the public and private sectors to address better political, environmental, economic, and social challenges in the field of development.

Global Footprint Network founder and president Mathis Wackernagel will deliver closing remarks on the second day of the conference, Thursday, December 8 at 5:30 pm CET.

Overshoot is humanity’s second largest risk in the 21st century. This event will explore the options that we have once we accept our context.

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. In 2022, Earth Overshoot Day fell on Thursday 28 July.

Human demand on nature can be tracked. Even conservative estimates show that it has exceeded what the biosphere can renew. If this is so, what are the implications? Who are the winners and the losers? What might be the most effective strategies, for businesses, cities, or entire countries? Are these strategies worth their effort?

On Monday, 21 November at 18:00 GMT, join Dr. Mathis Wackernagel for a free event exploring these topics at The Royal Society Of Edinburgh.

10th of October 2022 | Federal Environment Ministry, Berlin

The German Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection are taking the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Club of Rome’s landmark report ‘The Limits to Growth’ as an opportunity to take a closer look at the conclusions drawn from the debate on the limits to growth from a consumer perspective: What are the limits to consumption? What and how much less is good enough? How can globally generalizable consumption patterns be defined within planetary boundaries? And would post-growth actually fundamentally change our lifestyles?

The aim of the conference is to embed the abstract discussion based on economic indicators and global planetary boundaries in an everyday context and to make it more concrete. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of individual accounting tools for the concretization of sustainable lifestyles.

Professor Johan Rockström (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), Mamphela Ramphele (Co-President of the Club of Rome), Mathis Wackernagel (Global Footprint Network) and Professor Nico Paech (Universität Siegen) will provide their input during the conference.

The conference is aimed in particular at researchers, decision-makers and practitioners in the fields of sustainable consumption, sufficiency, post-growth, operationalization of planetary boundaries and footprints.

On October 12, join Dr. Mathis Wackernagel for a keynote and discussion on how to make sustainable futures relevant to the current decisions of cities, companies, and countries. Mathis will explore the benefits of questioning common premises about climate change, including: are we facing an “inconvenient truth”? Is there a contradiction between business necessities and ecological constraints? Is it realistic to assume that overshoot will ever end? Do we need to govern the global commons?  As a thought leader, he has been recognized for his ability to “translate the complexity of humanity’s impact on the environment and natural resources into a more understandable and actionable form.”

This in-person event takes place in Copenhagen as part of the Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies Futures Seminar series.

The future is “VUCA” – volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. And so is globalization. But what comes next? What should the next trading system be? And what happens to the UN Sustainable Development Goals? The 2nd Global Goals Forum examines the question of how globalization can be readjusted and sustainably oriented. Join us at the virtual summit on October, 13, 2022 from 9:00 – 16:30 CET!

The 2nd Global Goals Forum offers high-level panel discussions on “Globalization in Reverse?”, “How can we balance planet, purpose and profit?” and “Sustainability and the New Silk Road”. Our guests are board members and senior experts from the Club of Rome, World Economic Forum, UNEP, B Lab, Fridays for Future, Global Footprint Network, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, UNSSC, Volans, US-China Collaboration for Clean Energy (JUCCCE), James Cook University and many others. The Forum is organized under the patronage of the macondo foundation gemeinnützige UG.

The Global Goals Forum sees itself as a “marketplace of ideas.” At a time of increasing unpredictability in the international order, the conference provides a platform for leaders from politics, business, and civil society to discuss key challenges on the global agenda, such as tackling inequity, climate change, and corporate responsibility. In the sense of a “walk the talk”, the Forum provides space for discussion, but also for the development of very concrete recommendations for action for politics and business.

Registration is free and open to everyone.

Terra Madre Salone del Gusto is an international event dedicated to food politics, sustainable agriculture and the environment. Come to Parco Dora, Turin, from September 22-26, 2022 to shape the future of food with us! You can meet over 600 exhibitors in our market, and take part in a series of workshops, conferences and tastings that show how we can regenerate our planet through food.

Global Footprint Network and the Foodnected Community of Practice have several free events at Terra Madre:

  • Measuring how much we take from nature: The Ecological Footprint of food: The production of goods and services that human society is built on requires functioning ecosystems. By harvesting resources from the planet and releasing waste into it, we all have an environmental impact on the Earth. Immerse yourself in this free exhibition that explores the transition to sustainable and equitable food systems in Europe and the Mediterranean.
  • A platform to discover the Footprint of our food: The Food Footprint Platform, a website where you can view different categories of European and Mediterranean products and find out their impact, is launched.
  • Communities of best practices: Hear the lessons learned from communities of good practices that promote fair and sustainable food systems by supporting small local producers and short supply chains. They recount their journey so that good practices can become a shared heritage.

We hope to see you there!

Education is increasingly gaining a central role in easing the transition to a sustainable society, and Higher Education Institutions (HEI) play an important role in this transformation. Leveraging all the outputs produced during the EUSTEPs project, this final event aims to walk participants through the EUSTEPs Educational Materials for teaching sustainability, the open access, digital University Footprint Calculator, and the recently tested EUSTEPs MOOCs on Sustainability and Ecological Footprint.

This event is intended for the whole HEI community including academic staff (educators, professors, researchers), non-academic staff (administrative and technical), management bodies, students as well as all interested audiences who are curious to deepen their understanding of ways in which sustainability can be taught and practiced within HEI.

  • Learn about the EUSTEPs modules on Sustainability and Ecological Footprint and how it has been already used by several universities in their teaching;
  • Discover the new, open-access digital ‘University Footprint Calculator’ and learn about the experiences of the 4 Universities that have already piloted its use;
  • Deep dive into the results of the newly released EUSTEPs MOOC on Sustainability and Ecological Footprint and learn how you can engage in this lifelong journey.
